This link features many authors and some books that are mentioned in "The Catcher In The Rye." It features authors like Isak Dinesen, W Somerset Maugham, Emily Dickinson, and Ringgold Wilmer Lardner. While some of the books mentioned in this link are Out of Africa by Blixen, and Of Human Bondage by Maugham.

Estelle Fletcher was a singer mentioned in the book. The record mentioned by her called, "Little Shirley Beans" was in fact made up by Sallinger. It was never made by Fletcher. But Fletcher was in fact a real singer that sung in the 30's. I could not find any biographical information on Fletcher, but it was mentioned that her most famous record she sang on was "Dixieland."

Robert Burn's poem "If a body catch a body coming through the rye," is mentioned in the book and some of his most famous works include Tam o' Shanter and over three hundred songs he wrote. He is known as the National Bard or poet of Scotland. This poem is used because it gives an accurate idea of Holden's personality and most wanted dreams. Holden wants to be the catcher in the rye to protect kids childhood and innocence. This poem is stressed heavily in the book because it shows a different and often unseen part of Holden's personality.

Isak Dinesen's Out of Africa was used in the book because, Karen Blixen faced some miss fortune in the book and so does Holden in The Catcher In The Rye. He gets expelled from four different schools, saw James Castle die at his school, and his own brother died and that was a very tough time for him. Somewhat similar to In Out of Africa, Karen develops friendships with the natives around her and the other Europeans that arrive in Africa. She over comes many obstacles such as poverty and natural disasters. She then ends up losing her farm in the Great Depression and moves back to Europe

Emily Dickinson Only around 12 poems were published among her 800 in her life time but most of her poems deal with death and immorality. Salinger may have added Emily Dickenson in his book, because many of her poems dealt with death and immorality; a constant theme in The Catcher In The Rye

Ring Lardner was mainly a sports columnist and a short story writer, he published his first book of short stories called You Know Me, Al. Even though Lardner never wrote a novel, he was considered one of America's best writers. He struggled with an addiction to alcohol and later died of a heart attack on September 27, 1933. He had an alcohol addiction that could be related to Holden's own alcohol obsession.
