Holden Caulfield- Holden is the main character in "The Catcher in the Rye." Holden has just gotten thrown-out of Pency Preperatory School. He is failing all of his subject but English, which shows that he is capable of learning but just too lazy to put any effort towards the other subjects. He smokes, drinks and is the kid that is always getting into trouble. He had a little brother who died of leukemia when he was a little boy. He dealt with his brothers death in an irrational manner by punching all the windows out in his parent's car. His parents thought that that was just really unprecedented and sent him to get counciling. He wants contact with people but when his friends try to talk with him he just gets annoyed and wants to be left alone.

Ackley- He is Holden's roomate at Pency Prep. Ackley is a pimple-burdened teen; who has very few friends and very bad hygeine. Know-it-all, superior, wanted; these are all traits that Ackley thinks of himself as. When i say he thinks he's wanted I mean that as if people should care what he is doing like holden describes in chapter 4. Ackley has very bad hygeine; he doesn't brush his teeth, has zits and pops them whenever he is bored, and clips his fingernails on the floor. Holden can't stand him because of how he appears to him it makes him sick.

Stradlater- Is Holden’s other roommate at Pencey Prep. Stradlater is a handsome, self-satisfied, and popular guy. Stradlater is sexually active and quite experienced for a prep school student, which is why Holden calls him a “sexy bastard.” Holden talks about how Stradlater is always giving girls the time meaning he has sex with them or things related to sex . Holden calls Stradlater a “secret slob,” because he appears very well groomed, the things he uses to take care of himself such as his razor, are disgusting, and unclean.

Pheobe Caulfield-Is Holden’s ten-year-old sister, who he loves to death. Even though she is six years younger than Holden, she listens to what he says and understands him more than most other people do. Phoebe is intelligent, neat, and a wonderful dancer, in the book she is the only person or thing that brings happiness to Holden. Phoebe seems to recognize that Holden is his own worst enemy.

Sally Hayes- is a very attractive girl who Holden has known and dated for a long time. Holden says that she is “stupid,” although it is difficult to tell whether his judgment is based on reality or merely in Holden’s ambivalence about being sexually attracted to her. She is more conventional than Holden in her tastes and manners. external image 3034.jpg

Allie Caulfield-Is Holden’s younger brother. Allie dies of leukemia three years before the start of the time the novel takes place. Holden says that his brother was a brilliant, friendly, red-head and that he was the smartest of all the Caulfields. Holden is extremley bothered by Allie’s death and carries around his baseball glove on which Allie used to write poems in green ink.

Jane Gallagher-is a girl whom Holden spent a lot of time over summer, when their families stayed in neighboring houses in Maine. Jane never actually appears in, but she is extremely important to Holden, because she is one of the few girls who he both respects and finds attractive.

Maurice-is the elevator operator at the Edmont Hotel, who gets a prostitute for Holden, and later punches holden in the face because he wont pay him his five bucks for his prostitute even though all Holden does with her is talk.
