Chapters 14-17
1. Why did Maurice hit Holden?
-Because Holden apparently owed 5 more dollars to the prostitute and Holden wouldn't cooperate and he mouthed back to Maurice so Maurice punched him in the gut.
2. Holden said he felt like committing suicide. Why didn't he?
-Because he wanted to make sure that somebody covered him up right when he hit the ground. He "didn't want a bunch of stupid rubbernecks" looking at him all bloody and gory.
3. Identify Sally Hayes.
-A girl that he used to date, he sets up a date with her before he leaves the hotel.
4. Why did Holden check out of the hotel, and where did he go?
-Because he didn't want to deal with Maurice anymore, he went to Grand Central Station.
5. Who did Holden meet at the "little sandwich bar" after he locked his bags at the station? What did they talk about?
-Two nuns who had just moved to Manhattan. They talked about Romeo and Juliet and then he gave them 10 dollars as a charitable donation.
6. What record did Holden get for Phoebe? Why?
-"Little Shirley Beans", because even though it is sung for children, the singer doesn't sing it cutely and he knows that even though Phoebe is only 10, she understands.
7. What made Holden "not so depressed anymore" on his way to the record store?
-He saw a little boy walking down the street singing a song, "just for the hell of it."
8. Why didn't Holden like actors?
-Because he thinks they are almost too good and are cocky about what they do.
9. Why did Holden like the museum so much?
- He says, "The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was."
10. What did Holden think of "George something--"?
- He thought he was the biggest phony he had ever seen, George was talking about how the Lunts had such beautiful voices and that the play wasn't a masterpiece. Holden knew he was a fake.
11. How did Holden's feelings for Sally change from the beginning of the date to the end?
-He still liked her when the date started, still finding her attractive and stuff, but he couldn't connect with her at all. His craziness builds as he breaks down and tells her everything going wrong in his life, but everytime he tells her something she would counter it, and he would yell at her and steadily begins to hate her more and more until his need to be loved kicks in and he tells her they need to run away together. She immediately shoots down the idea and he tells her they need to leave because she is "a royal pain in his ass", she begins to cry and he apologizes over and over again and the date ends in complete disaster.
